Ray Miller – The Wandering Sportsman
Ray Miller has been an avid fisherman and hunter since his youth, with over 35 years of fly fishing experience. His journey began in the suburbs of Philadelphia, where, day after day, Ray wandered the countryside in search of his next adventure. Whether honing his skills on the stocked trout streams near home or chasing pheasants and deer across the beautiful fields of Bucks County, PA, his passion for the outdoors took root early.
Ray’s love for the sport grew with the guidance of his uncle, who introduced him to the rugged landscapes of the Pocono Mountains for authentic deer hunts and fishing trips. To Ray, these early experiences felt like adventures in far-off lands, where every cast and every hunt brought a new thrill. It wasn’t until the mid-80s that Ray first encountered the fly rod. One Sunday morning, while watching his favorite fishing celebrity, Jimmy Houston, Ray became captivated by the strange-looking fly rod that Houston was demonstrating. Intrigued, Ray rushed to his local tackle shop, where, after a few puzzled looks, he walked out with his first fly rod—a Kunan Rod and a Fleuger Reel. That was the beginning of a lifelong obsession, with Ray spending countless hours learning to cast and catch nearly everything that swam in the waters of northern Pennsylvania.
As Ray’s passion for fly fishing grew, so did his dedication to the outdoors. However, before he could fully immerse himself in the sport, Uncle Sam called. Ray served four years in the United States Army as a Physical Therapy Specialist, where he was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, for initial medical training. With fishing hard to come by in this area, Ray turned his attention to photography—a passion sparked in his early years. After hours of learning the craft, Ray was eventually stationed at Kimbrough Army Hospital in Maryland and later spent time at the renowned Walter Reed Army Hospital. This proximity to Pennsylvania’s rivers and streams reignited his hunting and fishing pursuits.
After his military service, Ray had the privilege of working alongside Barry Serviente, the director of The Fly Fishing Show. For over 10 years, Ray served as Barry’s assistant, which was crucial to his development as both a fly fisherman and an outfitter. Through this experience, Ray met countless influential people who became lifelong contacts and clients for his outfitting company, Riversage Outfitters. Ray’s guiding experience spans the globe, from Argentina and Chile to Alaska, Canada, and the Bahamas. He has also spent significant time guiding on the Upper Delaware River and Montana, and served as a past president of Pennsylvania’s largest fly fishing teaching club.
Today, Ray continues to lead international and domestic fly fishing trips to incredible locations like Chile, Argentina, Alaska, Canada, Belize, the Upper Delaware River, and South Andros, Bahamas. He is also deeply involved in video production, currently working on a series of instructional videos for fly fishing and wing shooting, along with promotional content for outdoor lodges, a fly fishing documentary, and even a television series.
Photography has been a constant in Ray’s life. His first camera, a Nikon EM gifted to him at age 10, sparked his lifelong love affair with the natural world. Growing up in the city of Philadelphia, Ray would often explore the nearby woods and capture the beauty of amphibians, reptiles, and insects through his lens. In the early 1980s, Ray attended The Antonelli Institute of Art, Photography & Design, where his passion for photography truly flourished. Over the years, his travels around the world—fly fishing and hunting in destinations like Argentina, Chile, Alaska, and Belize—have provided endless inspiration for his photographic work.
Though Ray’s journeys take him to some of the most remote and stunning locations on the planet, some of his favorite photographic subjects remain close to home in Pennsylvania. His goal as a nature photographer is to show others the beauty and magic of the natural world, whether in their own backyard or across the globe. He encourages others to slow down, be present, and truly see the wonders of the world around them.
Ray’s upcoming plans include offering photography workshops both locally and internationally, sharing his knowledge of capturing nature’s beauty with others. Through his work, Ray hopes to inspire viewers to explore, appreciate, and connect with the wild places that surround them in everyday life.
