Ray Miller has been fishing and hunting since he was a young man and fly fishing for over 35 years. It all began in the suburbs of Philadelphia, day in and day out Ray was wandering the countryside with his pals looking for the next adventure, whether it be honing his fishing skills on the many stocked trout that resided in the waters of his home town or chasing pheasants and deer along the beautiful fields that lined historic Bucks County, Pa.
From the early days, Ray grew into a sportsman with the help of his uncle who then took his adventures to the next level, traveling to the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania for an authentic deer or upland bird hunt or fishing the many spectacular lakes, creeks and rivers felt like an African adventure to Rays young eyes. It was not until the mid 80's when Ray first experienced the fly rod, it was a Sunday morning watching his all time favorite fishing celebrity, Jimmy Houston, when Jimmy brought out a strange looking fishing rod and explained the finer details of the fly fishing game. That was it, Ray was intrigued and took off to his local tackle shop to inquire about a fly rod, when arriving the owners kind of looked at Ray like what is this kid talking about. Anyway, after a lot of strange looks and questions, a Kunan Rod and Fleuger Reel was not part of his arsenal and Ray was hooked, spending countless hours learning how to cast his new toy and catch just about everything that swam in the waters surrounding his home. For years, Ray spent his time chasing the many trout, bass, carp, and anything that swam in the lakes, streams, and rivers that surrounded beautiful northern Pennsylvania
Just when all the fun was happening, Uncle Sam raised his head and asked for volunteers, so Ray spent 4 years in the United States Army as a Physical Therapy Specialist. Ray was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonia Texas, for his initial medical training. Fishing was kind of slim pickings in this area so Ray turned his attention to learning the art of photography, which he was introduced to an early age. Ray spent numerous nights after duty learning this fascinating art form. Miller eventually landed at Kimbrough Army Hospital in Maryland, and did a rotation at the world famous Walter Reed Army Hospital, where he was close to the fields and streams of his home state of Pennsylvania and the return of his hunting and fishing endeavors.
Once completed his military duty, he had the privilege of working for Barry Serviente, the director of The Fly Fishing Show. Ray was Barry's assistant for over 10 years and the time working for the Fly Fishing Show was critical to his evolution as a fly fisherman and eventually a guide and outfitter. Here he had the opportunity to meet many influential people who would eventually become contacts and clients for his outfitting company, Riversage Outfitters. Along with taking clients around the globe, Ray has also guided on the Upper Delaware River and Montana. Ray has been an integral part of the fly fishing community as a guide on the Upper Delaware River, fly fishing and casting instructor to many beginning and advanced students and past president of Pennsylvania's largest teaching fly fishing club.
Ray Currently hosts international and domestic trips to such exciting locations as Chile, Argentina, Alaska, Canada, Belize, Upper Delaware River, South Andros, Bahamas, and others. Ray currently is involved in video production and is presently working on a series of instructional videos for fly fishing and wing shooting, promotional videos for outdoor lodges, a fly fishing documentary and a television series.
Photography has always been a part of Miller's life, from his early years with the Nikon EM which his parents bought him as a Christmas gift at just 10 years of age to today where Ray wanders the globe in search of the perfect light with all the modern photographic gadgets.
That first camera, Miller's Nikon EM was the beginning of a love affair with the natural world, Ray spent his childhood years searching for amphibians, reptiles and insects and exploring other hidden natural treasures and photographed everything that would stand still for just a moment This all happened while residing in the city of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia. Ray was lucky though, living just outside the city and a wooded area just down his street where he could put his early photographic needs to work. Along with his desire to photograph everything that would stand still, a love for the outdoors emerged and the beginning of my sporting life was being developed too. Around early 1980's Miller attend The Antonelli Institute of Art, Photography & Design, here is where his passion for photography really took off. By now photography was a huge part of his life and Ray's passion for the outdoor world was really starting to grow. Ray has had the opportunity to travel the world fly fishing and hunting in locations such as Argentina, Chile, Alaska, Belize, Northern Canada and so many other remarkable destinations and photographing all his adventures. While he has enjoyed his travels and will always continue to wander the world, some of Miller's favorite photographic subjects are those he discovered within his home state of Pennsylvania.
As of now, Miller is currently wandering the world searching for the next perfect image but does have plans to offer photographic workshops both locally and to locations around the globe.
His goal as a nature photographer "is to show others that the beauty and magic of the natural world is waiting to be explored whether in our own backyard or across the globe. HIs belief is that we need to slow down and be present where we are to "see" and to experience the magic of the natural world." Ray's hope is that in viewing his photographs, people will be inspired to be present, explore and learn about the wild places around them and appreciate the beauty in the natural world that surrounds them in their everyday lives.
