Tierra del Fuego Sea Runs & Jurassic Bows Adventure
February 27 to March 10, 2025
The thrill of landing a sea-run brown trout, known for their tenacity and strength, draws intrepid fly anglers from all corners of the world. And among the many destinations to pursue these formidable fish, Tierra del Fuego stands out as truly remarkable. The island's record-breaking fish are some of the largest and most powerful found anywhere in the world. Originally introduced by British expat John Goodall in the 1930s, these sea-run browns took advantage of the rich food supply in the Atlantic Ocean and grew to otherworldly proportions. Now, they return to freshwater rivers to spawn each year, providing an unparalleled fly fishing experience.
Located at the southernmost tip of South America, Tierra del Fuego has been aptly described as "the end of the earth." This remote archipelago is home to stunning landscapes and slow-paced human development. The area's rivers originate in the towering Andes mountains before cascading down towards the flat rolling steppes and finally emptying into the brackish estuaries of the South Atlantic. The largest watershed on Tierra del Fuego, Río Grande is where you'll find the greatest concentration of sea-run browns - tens of thousands of wild trout make their annual return here. Guests staying at Estancia Laguna Verde will enjoy a full day of fishing, typically starting around 9 o'clock after a hearty breakfast and continuing until 1 o'clock. After a break for lunch and perhaps a siesta (depending on the season), guests return to the river in the late afternoon and fish until dark. Fishing hours may vary depending on the time of year. In addition to targeting sea-run browns, guests can also explore Jurassic Lake and Barrancoso River for trophy rainbows. The lodge itself is situated near Laguna Verde, a small lake teeming with fat rainbows and brown trout. A classic Patagonian estancia, the lodge features a main building with five cozy bedrooms, each equipped with two single beds and a private bathroom. The living room boasts spectacular views of Laguna Verde and includes a TV with satellite connection, a fully-stocked fly tying desk for guest use, and a well-stocked bar. Electricity is provided 24 hours a day via windmills and backup fuel generators. Laundry service is also available twice a week. Estancia Laguna Verde prides itself on offering the best and most varied fishing programs in all of Santa Cruz province. With exclusive access to over 14 kilometers of Strobel Lake, 10 kilometers of prime fishing spots along the Barrancoso River, and additional access to smaller lakes and lagoons, guests are sure to have an unforgettable fly fishing experience. But what truly sets Estancia Laguna Verde apart is their unique methods for catching these trophy rainbows. From sight fishing in crystal clear waters using floating lines, to slow stripping streamers and nymphs, or even skating large foam flies and mouse patterns - there's something for every angler here. And with experienced guides who are addicted to sight fishing, top-notch lodging, and the opportunity to catch a trophy rainbow trout, it's no wonder that more and more anglers return year after year for another taste of this amazing fishery in wild southern Patagonia. |
